THE IMPACT

Sustaining 100 Manganiyaar Families
Preserved folk traditions by supporting 100 Manganiyaar families in Jaisalmer during the COVID lockdown, ensuring their livelihood and cultural heritage.
COVID-19 severely restricted the global performances of folk artists and posed a challenge to the survival of the popular art form. The closure of tourist places and hotels during COVID deprived the artist community of their livelihood for several months. To preserve traditional folk music of the Thar, I Love Jaisalmer supported the Manganiyars through various means for their sustenance during the Covid pandemic. I Love Jaisalmer reached out to 100 Manganiyaar families in need, based in 8 remote villages of Jaisalmer. Awareness sessions on Covid protocols and government schemes supporting artists were conducted. Food kits were distributed to the families in need. Hands-on training sessions were conducted to help them to use social media to showcase their art on digital platforms. Supported by Suryagarh and Hoga films, an online performance platform for the prominent folk artists of the region was organised under Book My Show in collaboration with Gunsar Folk Music School, Jaisalmer.
